There are 9 levels or ‘Grades’ in our syllabus from beginner Grade 9 White Belt to Grade 1 – Probationary Black Belt. If you achieve full Black Belt rank, you can then train to move up through the Black Belt Grades. Progress between the grades is by way of assessments held 4 times a year. Your first assessment takes place in your class with your instructor when you are eligible – usually after about 12 lessons.
How can you make it realistic without risking injury?
Pro Mai is not a martial art geared towards competition, so we practice how to stay safe in the street which develops:
- Co-ordination, confidence & distance control
- Balance, agility & mobility
- Pre Defence (avoiding potential violence)
- Reaction time and speed.
- Realistic attacks and defence
- Clinching and grappling to take control
There are no winners and losers in our sparring drills. In sparring you will practice your tactics, i.e. what you are going to do, where and when – without making actual contact with your partner. This approach complements our ‘Power Drills’ where we use equipment such as focus mitts and kick shields to ensure that you are able to safely practice applying your techniques at full power. From years of experience, we know that this approach can and does work.
By combining the various elements of our syllabus, we ensure that you can train safely week on week while developing effective self-defence skills.
We also teach the understanding of keeping distance from your opponents, we call it the Green, RED, Green zones, you will be taught how to react and choose the correct distance depending on the situation ahead. But most importantly it’s about staying SAFE and getting home without needing to fight.
